After looking back for the past one month, I just want to say it is a worthwhile journey and it’s not come to an end yet.
For me, there has always been a sense of unreality during this learning process, I mean we are talking about Harvard, the best university on earth and the shining goal of all kids when you ask them “which university you want to study in it when you grown up?” So when I first stood in front of Harvard square it feels like in the childhood you tell everyone you’re going to the moon and one day you truly became an astronaut, start wondering is it dream come true or living in the dream.
Everything became even more unreality when I meet Professor G at first time, he told me that the main research project in here is about epigenomics, I didn’t even know that word before he told me that! So I had to learn some basic biology concept to read the article Genetic sources of population epigenomic variation. The good part is learning a new knowledge with on preoccupation but curiosity, trying to find out everything I need to know from Google was a fun thing to do, the bad part is it so hard for me as a master of psychology and a illiteracy of biology to learn this subject in molecular level, is like I have high school biology class here and my teachers are WiKi and Google. This is a completely different experience from study back in China, in here no one came to told you what to do and how to do unless you ask for help, I feel a little helpless at first but then came the feeling of freedom. During the discussion of my research plan with the professor I gradually learned how the scientific research works in Harvard and how to carry out a research project independently. After several days of discussion and careful explanation from professor G I set a research goal: to verify the viewpoint of a paper that only a small proportion of all possible combinations exist in the epigenome so there must be a biological restrictions on the placement of epigenetic marks, my research goal is to find out is it true that some kind of epigenetic marks can not exist together in any type of cells and what's the mechanism behind it. Professor teach me where to find clues to reach a conclusion and what tools may help me in the process, so even now I am already back in China I can still continue the data analysis by my own. It’s an exciting experience for me to do some research that I am interested in, rather than someone else's assigned topic, getting to know the way of education from the best university of the world is like opening a new perspective to me and harden my will to get the chance to study abroad.
As for living in Boston, it’s way much more better than I image. Before I went to Boston there were lots of reports about the heavy snow that hit the northeastern of United States, and there were many reports about the shooting so I am actually worry about safety. But after 13 hours fly I found myself landed in an peaceful city with the clean sky, even warmer than Beijing. The agency arranged the pick-up service they send me to the Airbnb I booked, where I gained friendship from many people, people who drive me to travel in the city and have dinner or drink in the bar together and we even have the Chinese new year together, cheer for international friendship! Probably because it’s long history and many famous universities located here, Boston is a modern, quiet and peaceful city with beautiful natural and cultural landscape. I visited Harvard and MIT campus and the road of freedom, the avenues and red houses here are in the typical American style, you can feel the different culture everywhere, and I highly recommend to taste the lobster roll in Boston, it’s awesome.
Thanks for the professor who led me to know a totally new field of knowledge, which gave me another possibility that I could work on in the future. Thanks for my nice roommates and landlord, the coolest guys and lady from Brazil, Germany, United States and Portugal they totally break my previous plan about lonely in the little room for a month of working on computer. After looking back for the past one month, I just want to say it is a worthwhile journey and it’s not come to an end yet.
